Take Action With the Dreams System

To take action on our dreams is important, but sometimes the first step is unclear. When someone asks me how they should get started with dreaming, my answer is simple; accomplish one dream. If you want to live a life of accomplishing your dreams, it’s as simple as accomplishing one. When you take action, it will propel you to complete the next one, and the next, and the next.

It helps to think about the Dreams List as a menu.

A large list, categorically organized, that provides countless opportunities for dream achievement- just pick a category you’re excited about and find different options to inspire you.

In the case of my Dreams Workshops, the final step in our exercise is always the same. We look at our menu- our list of dreams- and parcel out those that are possible in the next 3-6 months.

Then, we make a move.

We don’t end the session until we take action on at least one of our dreams. This is because when we accomplish a dream, even if it’s just one, it’s exciting and it encourages us to go back to our list and to see what’s next.

Take Action in Peak State

One thing I’ve learned through the evolution of my Dreams System is that we are most likely to take action when we’re in a peak state. When it comes to our Dreams List, we are in our peak state when we ‘dream storm,’ share, and dive in. This is when we should take steps towards achieving them.

Now, taking action doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be a simple act: booking a plane ticket, signing up for a race, sending an email. I was recently able to reconnect with someone who took my workshop, a wonderful individual named Caitlin. When we did the workshop, she shared she wanted to do a half-marathon and she booked it during the session. When we reconnected a year later, she was about to do her third one. Those additional races happened because she decided to take action then and there.

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about the “Domino Effect” and how one change in behavior can impact a lot of others. For example: if you find yourself going to the gym more often, you’ll find yourself more focused at work or making better eating decisions.

So again, my advice to you is to take action when you’re in a peak state. Looking at your list can get overwhelming, and you might ask, “where do I start with this?”

Just start with one.

You’ll return to peak state when you accomplish that dream. Then, you can return to your list and decide what’s next. You just need to create moments where you can take your first action again.
